The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

Common Questions About Scripture and Depression

Are there Bible verses specifically for depression?

Yes. The Bible does not ignore grief, despair, or emotional suffering. The Psalms in particular give language for lament, sorrow, numbness, and the feeling that God is far away. Elijah, Jeremiah, Job, and many others in Scripture experienced what we would recognize today as deep depression -- and God met them in it.

Why do Bible verses sometimes feel hollow when I am depressed?

Depression affects how the brain processes information, including encouragement and truth. When you are in a depressive episode, words that usually comfort may feel flat or disconnected. That is not a sign that your faith is failing -- it is a symptom of how depression works. Being patient with yourself in this is important.

Should I read the Bible differently when I am depressed?

It can help to focus on psalms of lament rather than passages that feel prescriptive. Psalms 22, 42, 88, and 139 all contain honest grief and are a good starting place. Short, slow reading -- even just one verse -- is more sustainable than long passages when you are struggling.

What if I feel angry when I read Scripture?

Bring that honestly. The Psalms include anger, accusation, and raw desperation -- and they are Scripture. God does not require polished feelings from you. Honesty in your relationship with Him is more real than performed peace.
